Cindy Macgowan' s Garden in Needham

We were lucky enough to meet Cindy Macgowan and see her garden on the 2013 Needham Garden Tour.  There are a number discrete garden areas each with its own theme. The entire garden and lawn space is a quiet oasis enclosed by mature trees.  Here are some photos taken from the day of the tour and the description of the garden that was found in the program.

Garden Description from the Needham Garden Tour Program

When the homeowners first saw this large yard with established beds of myrtle and pachysandra and a row of pristine white peonies along the stream, they were sold. The property’s good bones and garden potential was soon realized by Cindy Macgowan, a self proclaimed weekend warrior-gardener. Over the last six years, the yard has evolved and new beds have taken shape, some planned and some with Mother Nature’s intervention. The beautiful oval garden had originally been a raised vegetable garden but now has emerged as the “Blue and White” gem, featuring hydrangeas and agapanthus. A fallen tree by the pond created the perfect area for a woodland, shade-loving garden featuring native New England lady’s slipper, trillium and Jack in the pulpit. Another fallen tree wiped out the compost bin but opened a fertile space for a new collection of various hostas and coleus.

This garden is a work in progress and a labor of love. While her husband enjoys his weekends on the golf course, Cindy is happy getting her hands dirty and exercising her green thumb by experimenting with new plants and creating new garden spaces to enjoy.
